Colonic polyps have been described primarily in humans. Colonic polyps may be benign or pre-malignant. Most colonic polyps are benign and pedunculated and can be removed during colonoscopic examination. Although most colonic polyps occur sporadically, there are also familial conditions such as the familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome, which is transmitted as an autosomal dominant and has only been described in humans and not in non-human primates. Polyps may also arise as a reaction to chronic inflammation and such reactive polyps have been described in some non-human primates.   Small intestinal polyposis associated with parasites and occasional carcinomas have been described in M. sinica and M. mulatta.
