The vaginal hymen is a thin membrane partially covering the entrance to human vagina that is typically present as long as the female is a virgin. It is claimed that this membrane is not prominent in apes. However, it was suggested that it is present during embryogenesis in apes and then disappears in the adult. The evoutionary origin and practical significance of the hymen in humans is unknown, though various theories have been proposed.
