Virtual CARTA Public Symposium Makes a POSITIVE Global Impact: "Humans: The Planet-Altering Apes," Fri., May 13, 2022

May 25, 2022

Thank you to all who participated in CARTA’s virtual public symposium, "Humans: The Planet-Altering Apes," on Friday, May 13!

We are pleased to report that the event was well-attended and well-received despite the challenging topic, widespread "Zoom fatigue," and even an ill-fated date (Friday the 13th)! In fact, we are delighted to have attracted ~600 combined live stream and Zoom webinar viewers from 35 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The event talks and Live Speaker Q&A session videos are currently being edited by UCSD-TV for broadcast on the UCSD-TV Channel imminently, with the first videos already having been released to the site. Once the finished product is made available to us over the next few weeks, the videos (with high-quality closed captions) will be archived on multiple websites (UCSD-TV CARTA Channel, CARTA YouTube channel, CARTA Public Event Page, CARTA Symposium Video Archive, and iTunes, which can all be accessed by the general public.

If you would like to enjoy Friday’s presentations again, or if you missed the symposium, the talks will be aired on UCSD-TV in just a few weeks and then permanently archived online on multiple websites, including CARTA, UCSD-TV, iTunes, and YouTube. The talks that are posted on the CARTA site will contain high-quality closed captions to enhance your viewing experience. We will send another notice as soon as these recordings become available online.

Funding for "Humans: The Planet-Altering Apes," was provided with special support from:

CARTA Patrons Elizabeth Lancaster & Eli Shefter (in honor of The Bees); CARTA Friends Feroza Ardeshir & Suresh Subramani (in honor of Dr. Nissi M. Varki), Kathlyn Furr, and Pamela N. & Michael Swartout; as well as CARTA Supporters Kalvin Drake, Guy Miller, Christoph Roehrig, and John Sterling. Closed captioning for these recordings was made possible by CARTA Patrons Ingrid Benirschke-Perkins & Gordon Perkins.

Sponsorships for upcoming symposia are available. Email khunter@ucsd.edu or visit the CARTA Support page for more information!

Thank you, once again, for your continued curiosity and we hope you will join us again for a future CARTA symposium! Until then, please take care of yourselves, each other, and this space rock we call home.
