In many human cultures, cleanliness is a valued quality. While the degree of cleanliness can vary from using oils to both mask odors and remove dirt, to bathing in water, to using antiperspirants to suppress body odors, nearly all societies have some social norms regarding cleanliness. Cleanliness can also be ritualistic, engaging the members of a culture in a social group activity. In great apes, the need or desire for cleanliness appears much less prominent. While they groom each other, removing parasites, dirt and debris, there is no form of routine bathing documented.
